Backyard playset surfacing
The surfacing under a home swing set costs a fraction of the set itself and does more to prevent a broken arm than anything else you can buy.
Short answer
A typical backyard playset needs 600 to 1,200 sq ft of protected surfacing, driven by the swing beam. At 9 inches deep that is roughly 20 to 40 cubic yards of engineered wood fiber, about $1,200 to $3,000 delivered and installed yourself in 2026 US pricing. Grass and bare dirt are not protective surfacing at any depth.

Work out the area first, and expect it to be larger than you think
The rule is simple and the result surprises most people. The protected area extends 6 feet in every direction from the structure, except in front of and behind a swing, where it extends twice the height of the swing beam pivot.
A common home set has a swing beam about 8 feet off the ground. That means 16 feet of protected surfacing in front of the swings and 16 feet behind: a 32 foot corridor, before you add the fort, the slide exit and the 6 foot perimeter around everything else. A typical set lands somewhere between 600 and 1,200 square feet of surfacing.

Turning area into cubic yards
The arithmetic is one line: square feet, times depth in feet, divided by 27, plus 25 percent.
The 25 percent is the compaction allowance. Loose fill is rated at its uncompacted depth and it settles within weeks, so ordering exactly the finished volume leaves you short by roughly a quarter. The rated depth is the depth the ASTM F1292 test was run at2, and a settled bed is a thinner bed.

For the 800 square foot example at 9 inches, 28 cubic yards of bulk engineered wood fiber runs roughly $1,000 to $2,100 in material plus delivery, against perhaps $4,000 to $8,000 in bags for the same volume. If a truck can reach the yard, bulk is the only sensible choice.
Rubber mulch costs three to five times as much up front and lasts far longer without decomposing, which is a reasonable trade for a family expecting eight or ten years of use. The full comparison is in rubber mulch and engineered wood fiber.
Borders, edging and weed barrier
Loose fill migrates to wherever nothing stops it. A border is not decoration, it is the thing that keeps the depth where the falls happen.
Common options for a home installation are pressure treated 4x6 landscape timbers pinned with rebar, composite playground borders sold as kits with molded corners, or a flexible aluminum or plastic edge for curves. Set the top of the border level with the finished surfacing, not above it. A border standing 3 inches proud inside the use zone is a trip hazard and something to land on.
On weed barrier, the answer is yes with one condition. Use a permeable non-woven geotextile under the fill, which separates the surfacing from the soil and slows weeds. Do not use plastic sheeting or pond liner, which traps water, keeps the fill wet and rots it from below. Where water already pools in that corner of the yard, fix the drainage first: drainage, base and containment covers the diagnosis and the retrofit.
The grass and dirt question, answered honestly
Plenty of home swing sets stand on lawn. It is worth being straight about what that means.
Grass over topsoil provides very little impact attenuation, and it provides less every month. Within one season of regular use the ground under the swings and at the slide exit is bare, compacted soil, which behaves close to hard ground in a fall. The CPSC handbook does not accept grass, topsoil or packed earth as protective surfacing for exactly this reason1. The CPSC's home playground handbook gives the same advice for residential sets3.
If installing loose fill is genuinely not possible this year, the useful fallbacks are ranked, and none of them is as good as surfacing:
- Lower the fall height. A shorter set, a lower deck or a lower swing beam reduces the energy in every fall, and it is free if you have not bought yet.
- Move the set off any slope and away from fences, walls, trees and patios.
- Put a rated mat under each swing seat and at the slide exit, bedded level, understanding that it protects two spots and not a use zone.
- Keep the ground from packing, by moving the set periodically if it is not anchored in place.
The right answer remains a contained bed of loose fill at the correct depth. It is one weekend and, for most yards, less than the cost of the slide.
Mats under swings
Rubber swing mats and slide exit mats cost roughly $50 to $150 each in 2026 US pricing. They are worth having on a loose fill installation, where their job is to stop the divot that forms under every swing seat and to hold depth at the place that loses it first.
Bed the mat into the surfacing so its top sits flush. A mat lying loose on top of mulch curls, shifts, hides a hollow underneath and becomes the trip hazard it was meant to prevent. Check it whenever you check the swing hardware, at the same point in the season you inspect the rest of the set.

Time and equipment: for a flat 800 square foot yard, two people can strip sod and excavate in a day and spread 28 cubic yards in another. Rent a sod cutter if the area is large, and stage the pile as close to the gate as the truck can get, because moving material is most of the work. If the yard needs leveling first, site prep and leveling covers the grading step, and anchoring should be finished before surfacing goes down, since anchors are much harder to install through 9 inches of fill.
Keeping it at depth
Wood fiber decomposes, so expect a full top-up cycle of 2 to 4 cubic yards every one to two years, and a partial rebuild somewhere around year seven to ten. Rubber mulch does not decompose, so its top-ups are about displacement only.
Slopes and small yards
On a slope, level the pad before anything else. The fall height is measured to the lowest surfacing point in the use zone, so a set on a grade needs more protection on the downhill side, and loose fill will migrate downhill until it is contained. The usual solution is a terraced pad with a low retaining edge on the uphill side and a taller one downhill, built so the finished surface is level and the containment holds the depth.
In a small yard, the swing corridor is what does not fit. Options that work: choose a set with the swing bay on the end rather than the side, lower the beam, pick a set with a slide and climber but no swing, or accept a smaller structure. Do not reduce the use zone to fit the yard, because the use zone is the yard's answer to whether the set belongs there at all. Small yards works through the layouts.
What to do next
Measure the swing corridor, calculate your cubic yards, then price bulk delivery from two local suppliers before considering bagged product. Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards of mulch do I need under a swing set?
Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet, divide by 27, then add about 25 percent for compaction. For 800 square feet at 9 inches that is 800 times 0.75 divided by 27, which is 22 cubic yards settled, so order about 28. Bagged product needs the same volume at much higher cost.
Is grass enough under a backyard swing set?
No. The CPSC handbook does not accept grass, topsoil or packed earth as protective surfacing, and the ground under a swing wears to bare compacted soil within one season anyway. That worn patch is the exact spot where children land hardest. If you cannot install loose fill, lower the equipment instead.
How deep should wood chips be under a playset?
Nine inches of engineered wood fiber covers fall heights up to about 7 feet, which suits most home playsets. Go to 12 inches if the highest standing surface is above that. Depth is measured uncompacted, so order roughly a quarter more material than the finished depth suggests and remeasure after a month.
Should I put landscape fabric under playground mulch?
Yes, use a permeable non-woven geotextile. It keeps the fiber out of the mud, keeps the mud out of the fiber and slows weeds. Do not use plastic sheeting, which traps water under the surfacing. Cut a cross in the fabric at each leg and anchor rather than wrapping the posts.
Do rubber mats under swings replace deep mulch?
No. A swing mat controls the divot that forms under each seat and keeps the wear point tidy. It does not create a rated surface on its own and it does not let you reduce depth elsewhere. If you use one, bed it flush with the surfacing so no edge stands proud as a trip hazard.
