What a playground costs

The equipment quote is the number everyone remembers and the smallest part of the bill.

Short answer

In 2026 US pricing, a small neighborhood park playground runs about $75,000 to $200,000 installed, an elementary school playground $150,000 to $450,000, a small childcare yard $40,000 to $120,000, and a destination playground $500,000 upward. Equipment is usually a third to a half of the total. Surfacing, site work, labor and contingency are the rest. Regional labor and site conditions move every figure.

What a public playground costs in 2026

A public playground is a construction project with a play structure in the middle of it. Priced that way, the 2026 US numbers look like this.

These are totals, not equipment quotes. They assume a site you can reach with a truck, soil you can dig, and a design that fits the space. They exclude land, parking, restrooms, lighting, irrigation reroutes and anything the city asks you to build because you triggered a site plan review.

Equipment is a third to a half of the total

This is the single most useful rule on the page. On a public playground built to standard, the equipment invoice lands between roughly 33 and 50 percent of the finished project cost. Loose fill surfacing and an easy site push you toward the high end of that share. Poured rubber, a sloped site or a long accessible route push you toward the low end, because everything else grows while the equipment stays the same.

Two practical uses. First, when a committee has a $250,000 grant and a $240,000 equipment quote, the project is not funded. Second, when you are sizing a wish list against a fixed budget, take the budget, subtract contingency, and give the equipment 40 percent of what is left. That is your real catalog allowance.

The trap is the reverse calculation. Sales configurations often quote equipment with surfacing estimated as a lump allowance and site work marked "by others". "By others" is you, and it is usually the larger number.

Cost per square foot, and what moves it

Per square foot of finished play area is the fastest sanity check on any estimate, because it normalizes away the size of the structure.

Two things explain most of the spread. The first is fall height. Surfacing depth and rating are set by the highest designated play surface, so a 10 foot tower makes every square foot of the use zone more expensive, not just the ground under the tower. Read fall height and use zones before you approve a concept, because that decision is priced across hundreds of square feet.

The second is the accessible route. The 2010 ADA Standards require an accessible route to and within the play area, and require a firm, stable, slip resistant surface on it. That means either a unitary surface or a loose fill product tested for accessibility, plus paving from the nearest accessible path. Cost per child, honestly

There is no national benchmark for cost per child, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Do your own arithmetic instead, and state the basis when you present it.

  • Per enrolled child. Total cost divided by enrollment or membership. Useful for a school PTA, an HOA board or a childcare operator.
  • Per child at design capacity. Total divided by the number of children the structure is designed to hold at once, usually 40 to 100 for a school sized composite. This exposes an overbuilt tower serving twelve kids.
  • Per child per year. Divide the first figure by a 15 to 20 year service life, then add annual maintenance. This is the number that survives a hostile budget meeting.

What drives the price up

In rough order of how much damage they do:

  1. Fall height. Every extra foot raises the surfacing spec across the entire use zone. Dropping a deck from 8 feet to 6 feet can save an inch or two of depth over several hundred square feet.
  2. Surfacing choice. The gap between loose fill and poured rubber on a 3,000 sq ft site is commonly $40,000 to $80,000 in 2026 pricing.
  3. Site access. If a truck and an excavator cannot reach the pad, everything moves by hand or by small machine. Add 15 to 30 percent to site work and installation.
  4. Slope and soil. Retaining walls, imported fill, rock removal and spoil haul are the classic overruns. A survey costs far less than the surprise.
  5. Accessible route length. Concrete paving runs roughly $12 to $25 per square foot installed in 2026, and the route has to come from an existing accessible path, not from the parking lot edge.
  6. Drainage. A play area that ponds destroys loose fill and voids poured rubber warranties. Underdrain and stone base are not optional on a wet site. See drainage and base layers.
  7. Prevailing wage. Federally assisted projects are commonly subject to Davis-Bacon wage determinations, and many states have their own thresholds for public work. This typically adds 10 to 25 percent to installed labor.
  8. Shade. A manufactured shade structure is $12,000 to $45,000 installed in 2026, depending on span and footing depth. Shade structures covers the choice.

Read it twice. The equipment is 31 percent. The surfacing is 20 percent. The things nobody puts on the fundraising thermometer, site work through contingency, are more than a third of the bill. At $105 per square foot this sits at the upper end of the benchmark table, and the reason is the poured surfacing. Swapping to engineered wood fiber would cut roughly $50,000 from the capital cost and add a recurring top-up obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the installed price so much higher than the equipment catalog price?

Because the catalog price covers steel and plastic sitting on a truck. Installed price adds freight, excavation, drainage, a base layer, a border, protective surfacing across the whole use zone, an accessible route, labor, design fees, permits and contingency. On a typical public project the equipment is a third to a half of the total, so doubling the equipment quote is a fair first guess.

How much does a school playground cost per student?

Divide the installed total by enrollment. A $300,000 playground at a 400 student elementary school is $750 per enrolled child, once, for a structure with a 15 to 20 year service life. That framing tends to land better with a school board than the raw total, but present it alongside the annual inspection, surfacing and repair budget rather than instead of it.

Can we save money by installing the equipment ourselves?

Sometimes, and it carries real risk. Volunteer installation can cut 10 to 20 percent from a project, but most manufacturers only honor the full warranty when a certified installer does the work or supervises it. Footings, deck heights and hardware torque are the items that fail inspection. If you go this route, budget for professional supervision and a post-install audit.

What is the cheapest surfacing that still meets the standard?

Engineered wood fiber is normally the lowest first cost that can be rated for a real fall height, often $4 to $9 per square foot installed in 2026 US pricing. It is also the highest maintenance: it compacts, migrates and needs topping up. Poured rubber costs several times more up front and much less to keep at depth.

How much contingency should we carry?

Ten percent of construction cost on a flat, well understood site with a recent survey, and 15 to 20 percent on a site with unknown soils, old footings, buried utilities or a slope. Contingency covers what the ground hides, not what the committee changes its mind about. Price scope changes separately so the two never get confused.
